Alkmaar - Alkmaar (English spelling)

A city in the central province of Noord-Holland in the northwest of the Netherlands. Population 93,022 (2001). Located along the North Holland Canal leading to Amsterdam, it is a commercial city famous for its cheese market. Every Friday morning from April to September, between 10am and 12pm, a ceremony is held in front of the weighing house (established in 1582) where cheese carriers in white robes and straw hats weigh red and yellow Edam cheese, and many tourists come for this ceremony. It originated as a fishing village established in the 10th century and was granted city law in 1254, but developed into a trading center after the reclamation of the surrounding marshes in the late 17th century. In 1573, it withstood a siege by Spanish troops during the Dutch War of Independence, which marked a turning point in the war. It has a Gothic Grote Church and a 16th-century town hall.
