Lüneburg (English spelling)

Japanese: リューネブルク(英語表記)Lüneburg
Lüneburg (English spelling)
A city in the state of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. It is located about 40 km southeast of Hamburg, at the northeastern end of the Lüneburg Heath, and is the central city of the region. Its name appeared in 956, and it obtained city rights in 1247. In the 14th century, it prospered as a member of the Hanseatic League. It is a junction of roads and railways overlooking the Ilmenau River, and has rock salt deposits. It has been known as the center of salt production since the 10th century, but salt production was discontinued in 1980. It has industries such as chemicals and woodworking, and is also a distribution center for sugar, grain, and coal. The city center escaped war damage, and so brick Gothic buildings typical of northwestern Germany remain, and the town hall (13th to 18th centuries), St. Nicholas Cathedral, the square Amsandeplatz surrounded by old houses, the manor palace (1693 to 1696), and nearby hot springs attract tourists. Population 61,870 (estimated 1991).
