Isshūkamae - One Sect

Japanese: 一宗構 - いっしゅうかまえ
Isshūkamae - One Sect
〘 noun 〙 A type of punishment imposed only on the monks and nuns in the early modern period. It meant complete expulsion from the sect to which one belonged. It was more severe than the ippa kamae (a group of people who were expelled from one sect but could join another sect of the same sect) . ※Hyakukajo Chousho (Edo) 17 "Subordinates of a group of people who belonged to one sect will have to take off their robes and wear gravel."
