Innoshima

Japanese: 因島 - いんのしま
Innoshima
The former city area of Onomichi City, in the southeast of Hiroshima Prefecture. It consists of the whole of Innoshima Island, part of Ikuchijima Island, and surrounding small islands in the Seto Inland Sea. In 1953, the towns of Habu, Takuma, and Sansho and the villages of Nakasho, Ohama, Shigei, and Higashi-Ikuchi were merged to form a city. In 2006, it was incorporated into Onomichi City. In the Middle Ages, it was the base of the Murakami Navy (→Murakami clan), and its appearance can still be seen in the ruins of Aokage Castle, a prefectural historic site. Until the end of the Meiji period, it was a farming and fishing village, but since a shipyard was built in Habu, the city center on the southwest coast of Innoshima, in 1911, it has developed into a shipbuilding city. Large shipyards and related factories are located here, and many people commute from the surrounding islands. Hakozaki, north of Habu, was known for its inland sea houseboat (boats for people living on the water) fishing. In rural areas, the mountain slopes are used to cultivate citrus fruits such as mandarins and hassaku, as well as daisies, sweet potatoes, and olives.
