A breed of dog. Depending on size, they are divided into small toy poodles (shoulder height 25.5 cm or less in the United States, 28 cm or less in the United Kingdom), medium-sized miniature poodles (shoulder height 25.5 cm or more in the United States, 28 cm or more in the United Kingdom, both 38 cm or less), and large standard poodles (shoulder height 38 cm or more). Originating in France. Their coat is very lush and dense, and is usually trimmed. Colors include white, black, and brown. In the past, they were used to guard livestock and hunt waterfowl, but more recently they have been used as pets and are good at learning tricks.
