Year of death: Kennin 1.2 (1201) Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander in the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. His father was Jokuro Sukekuni. Younger brother of Joku Sukenaga. Initially called Sukeshiki. Since it was called "Shirakawa Oyakata," we can tell that he had his residence in Shirakawa Manor in Echigo Province (southeastern Kitakanbara County, Niigata Prefecture). In June 1181, after the death of his brother Sukenaga, he marched into Shinano Province at the head of an army of over 10,000 men, and fought against Kiso Yoshinaka at Yokota-gawara (Nagano City), but was defeated. In August of the same year, he was appointed Echigo no Kami, but in the spring of 1184, he was captured by Kamakura forces that invaded Echigo, and was sent to Kamakura as a prisoner. In September 1188, he met Yoritomo through the intercession of a Kumano monk, Sadato, but refused to become a vassal. In July of the following year, he was allowed by Yoritomo to take part in the conquest of Oshu, and it seems he became a vassal afterwards. In January of 1201, after the death of Yoritomo, he attempted to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate, raising an army in Kyoto, but failed, and was killed in February of the same year. In response to Nagamochi's uprising in Kyoto, his nephew Sukemori and his sister Sakanoue rose up in rebellion in Echigo Province, but were killed by the Shogunate forces, and the clan was wiped out.
