A factor that induces mutations in living organisms, and when it is a substance it is called a mutagen or simply a mutagen. These mutagens often also have teratogenic and carcinogenic properties. Mutations occur naturally at a certain frequency, but under the action of certain factors, mutations can be induced at a higher frequency than the natural frequency of mutations. These factors are called mutagens, and the main examples include temperature changes, radiation, and chemicals. Mutagens often act on the DNA that makes up the genes in cells, changing the order and combination of base sequences. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
