...The size of magnetic domains ranges from ^10-4 cm for small ones to about 1 cm for large ones. The existence of magnetic domains is said to have been predicted by P. Weiss in 1907, but their existence was not experimentally demonstrated for the first time in 1931 by American Francis Bitter (1902-67), and theoretical research was started by LD Landau and EM Lifshitz (1935). Factors that determine the magnetic domain structure include magnetostatic energy, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, and magnetostriction.
