…On the eastern front, the Union Army, heading for Richmond, was repeatedly thwarted by the Confederate Army under the command of General Lee. General Lee invaded the North in the spring of 1862, but was stopped at the Battle of Antietam in mid-September. On the western front, the Union Army moved south from the Ohio River and entered the Mississippi River basin, but the situation developed rapidly when General U.S. Grant, who understood the nature of modern warfare, took command of the western front, and the Union Army entered Chattanooga, Tennessee at the end of 1863. …
