Tsuruoka Shrine Records - Tsuruoka Shrine Records
Diaries of the successive head priests (betto) of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. 2 volumes. Date of compilation and editor unknown. Records from the first head priest Enkyo in 1192 (Kenkyu 3) to the 19th head priest Yorinaka in 1355 (Shohei 10/Bunwa 4). Along with brief biographies of the head priests and articles on religious ceremonies and prayers, the diary also records the movements of the shogunate and various political forces surrounding the eastern provinces during that period, making it an important source for learning not only about the history of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, but also about the history of the eastern provinces in the Middle Ages. Included in the Revised Collection of Historical Documents. [Tonooka Shinichiro]
