Ishiyama Shell Mound

Japanese:
Ishiyama Shell Mound

This early Jomon freshwater shell mound is located in a small park on the right bank of the Setagawa River in Ishiyama Terabe-cho, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. It was discovered in 1940 (Showa 15) and has been excavated several times since. The shells of the Seta Corbiculatus clam, which still live in abundance around the outlet of the Setagawa River from Lake Biwa, make up the majority of the shells. There are very few shell mounds facing inland lakes and marshes in Japan, and this is the only one on the shore of Lake Biwa. The shell layer stretches along the riverbank for about 50 meters north to south and 20 meters east to west, and is about 2 meters thick at its thickest point. It is one of the larger inland shell mounds and early Jomon shell mounds, and has unearthed many valuable artifacts from the late Jomon period, including several types of pottery from the late early period, five buried human skeletons, and ornaments made from shells and antlers.
