Crocidura dsinezumi (ground mouse)

Japanese: ジネズミ(地鼠) - ジネズミ（英語表記）Crocidura dsinezumi

A small mammal of the family Sorecoidae in the order Insectivore. Also known as the Japanese spotted mouse. Found only in Japan and Jeju Island, it is very small, with a body length of 6-8 cm, tail length of 4-4.5 cm, and weight of 6-12 g. A subspecies of the closely related species, the Watase's spotted mouse C. horsfieldi watasei , found on Amami Oshima, is one of the smallest mammals in the world, with a body length of 5.5 cm. There are more than 140 closely related species in the same genus, which are widely distributed in warm regions of Asia, Europe, and Africa. This species is relatively rare in Hokkaido, but abundant in central and western Honshu.

食虫目トガリネズミ科の小哺乳類。ニホンジネズミともいう。日本と済州島のみに分布し，体長6～8cm，尾長4～4.5cm，体重6～12gとごく小さい。近縁種のオナガジネズミの亜種，奄美大島産のワタセジネズミC.horsfieldi wataseiは，体長5.5cmで，世界最小の哺乳類の一つ。よく似た同属の近縁種は140種以上もあり，アジア，ヨーロッパ，アフリカの温暖な地方に広く分布する。本種は，北海道には比較的少なく，本州中部以西では数が多い。
