Egyptian military officer and politician. He participated in the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 as a leader of the Free Officers. He became Speaker of the National Assembly in 1959, Vice President in 1964, and President after Nasser's sudden death in 1970. He took a pro-Western stance and signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 based on the Camp David Accords. He was assassinated in 1981.
