… In 1949, after the Second World War, popular riots broke out due to dissatisfaction with the Buganda leadership over land issues and resentment against the Indian monopoly on cotton purchasing. In 1952, a nationalist party, the Uganda National Congress (UNC), was founded under the leadership of IK Musazi and aimed for independence. The following year, Buganda King EFMutesa II was exiled to London for opposing Britain's move to form the East African Union. The UNC also joined the movement to promote the king's return, but was caught up in the political movement of Buganda and gradually began to split. …
