A Greek tragedy by Euripides written in the early stages of the Peloponnesian War (420s BCE). After the fall of Troy, Andromache, wife of the Trojan hero Hector, became a concubine to Neoptolemus, King of Thessaly, son of Achilles, and bore him a child. Hermione, Andromache's wife, conspired with her father, King Menelaus of Sparta, to kill Andromache and her son, but was prevented by Neoptolemus' grandfather Peleus. Meanwhile, Orestes, Hermione's former fiancé and cousin, kills Neoptolemus in Delphi and takes Hermione away. The author portrays the three Peloponnesians, Menelaus, Orestes, and Hermione, as villains, representing the general hostility toward Sparta among Athenians at the time. Andromache |
