A town in Higashimorokata County in central Miyazaki Prefecture. It occupies the midstream area of the Ayakita River and Ayanami River, tributaries of the Oyo River, and is largely covered with forests and wilderness. The main settlement near the confluence was a strategic location on the road to Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture). Traditional crafts such as goban (Japanese kaya wood boards), tsumugi (woven silk), pottery, and bamboo crafts are thriving here. 95.19 km2 . 7,224 people (2010).
