Born: July 28, 1804, Landshut Died: September 13, 1872, Rechenberg, near Nuremberg. German materialist philosopher. Known for his criticism of Christianity. Belonged to the left wing of Hegelian philosophy. Studied at the University of Berlin and was strongly influenced by Hegel. In 1828 he became a lecturer at the University of Erlanger, but in 1830 he criticized Christianity in his anonymous essay Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit (Reflections on Death and Immortality), and was expelled from the university in 1832. After retiring to Bruckberg, he lectured at the University of Heidelberg for a time (winter semester 1848-49), but spent most of his time writing about Hegelian philosophy and criticism of Christianity. His main work Das Wesen des Christentums (41) had a great influence on Marx, Engels, and others. Feuerbach |
