Nicolas Lancret

Nicolas Lancret

French painter. Born and died in Paris. He initially aspired to be a history painter and aimed to win the Prix de Rome, but failed. He began working in Claude Giraud's studio around 1712-13, and inherited from Giraud his interest in performing arts, including the Commedia dell'arte, and genre painting. In 1719, he became an Academician one year after Watteau, as a painter of "Fate Galantes". He spent most of his time in Paris, producing works in a style that followed Watteau's, and although his figures do not have the high spirituality of Watteau's sadness, he conveys the atmosphere of the era more directly. His representative works include "Symposium" (1735, Chantilly, Musee Condé) and the series "The Four Seasons" (c. 1738, Louvre). Lancret's paintings were reproduced in large quantities by copperplate engraving from the end of the 1720s, and his fame increased. He also left behind many colored chalk drawings.
