Gifu City is located in the central-southern part of Gifu Prefecture, spreading across the Nagara River and its tributaries, the Itadori River, the Mugi River, and the Tsubo River. It borders Fukui Prefecture to the north, and its area forms a U-shape. Seki Village was incorporated as a town in 1889. In 1921, it merged with Yoshida Village. In 1943, Sejiri Village and Kurachi Village were incorporated, in 1948, part of Tahara Village, and in 1949, part of Tomioka Village were incorporated. In 1950, Senbiki Village and Tahara Village were incorporated to form a city. In 1951, Shimoarichi Village was incorporated, in 1954, Tomino Village, in 1955, Koganeda Village, and in 1956, part of Minamimuge Village was incorporated. In 2005, two towns and three villages were incorporated: Horado Village, Itadori Village, Mugegawa Town, Muge Town, and Kaminoho Village. Seki has long been famous as a place where Japanese swords were forged, and is known as Seki smiths. Swordsmiths Magoroku Kanemoto, Kanekichi, and Kanesada flourished. In the Meiji period, knives, razor blades, and scissors were produced. In recent years, metal Western-style tableware and kitchenware have been produced. Forestry is thriving in the area, as most of the area is covered by forest. In addition to rice, taro, kiwi fruit, shiitake mushrooms, and tea are cultivated. There are many ancient temples and shrines, including the remains of Miroku-ji Temple (a nationally designated historic site), Shin-Hasedera Temple, which has many nationally designated important cultural properties, and Tsukahara ruins. Part of the city area belongs to Oku-Nagara River Prefectural Natural Park. The Nagaragawa Railway, National Routes 156, 248, 256, and 418 pass through the city, and there is an interchange on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway. The area is 472.33 km2 . Population: 89,153 (2015). 岐阜県中南部,長良川とその支流板取川,武儀川,津保川などの流域に広がる市。北部で福井県に接し,市域は U字状をなす。1889年関村が町制。1921年吉田村と合体。1943年瀬尻村と倉知村,1948年田原村の一部,1949年富岡村の一部をそれぞれ編入。1950年千疋村,田原村を編入して市制。1951年下有知村,1954年富野村,1955年小金田村,1956年南武芸村の一部をそれぞれ編入。2005年には洞戸村,板取村,武芸川町,武儀町,上之保村の 2町 3村を編入した。古くから日本刀の鍛冶地として著名で,関鍛冶 (→関物) の名で知られる。刀工として孫六兼元,兼吉,兼定らが隆盛をきわめた。明治期に入りナイフ,かみそりの刃,はさみを生産。近年は金属洋食器,厨房品などを生産する。森林が大部分を占めるため,林業が盛ん。農業は米作のほか,サトイモ,キーウィフルーツ,シイタケ,チャ (茶) などの栽培が行なわれる。弥勒寺跡 (国指定史跡) のほか,多数の国指定重要文化財を有する新長谷寺,塚原遺跡など古社寺,旧跡も多い。市域の一部は奥長良川県立自然公園に属する。長良川鉄道,国道156号線,248号線,256号線,418号線が通り,東海北陸自動車道のインターチェンジがある。面積 472.33km2。人口 8万9153(2015)。
