[Born] Around the 27th year of King Xuan (343 BCE)
[Died] Around the 22nd year of the reign of King Xiang (277 B.C.). A poet and politician of the Chu state during the Warring States period in China. His real name was Hei. His pen name was Yuan. He was from an aristocratic family in Chu, and was initially trusted by King Huai, playing an active role in the internal and external affairs of Chu as one of the Three Lu (three-lo) officials. However, when King Xiang (who succeeded King Huai) rejected his pro-Qi and anti-Qin policies, he was exiled to Jiangnan. After wandering around various places, he could not bear to see his homeland on the brink of destruction by Qin, so he threw himself into the Miluo River. He is the creator and perfector of the new Chuci poetry genre based on Chu folk songs, and his masterpiece, Li Sao, is a long poem that blends his thoughts and emotions into a free-spirited world of mythical fantasy based on his tragic life. Other works that are said to be his include Nine Songs, Heavenly Questions, and Nine Chapters.

中国，戦国時代の楚の詩人，政治家。本名，平。原は字。楚の貴族の家柄で，初め懐王に深く信任され，三閭 (さんりょ) 大夫として楚の内政外交に活躍した。しかし懐王のあと即位した頃襄 (けいじょう) 王にその親斉反秦の方針が退けられ，江南に流された。その後各地を放浪した末，秦によって滅亡に瀕する祖国を見るに忍びず，汨羅 (べきら) の川に身を投じて終った。楚の民謡を基調とする新しい詩のジャンル楚辞の創造者かつ完成者で，代表作『離騒』は，彼の悲運の生涯をもとに，その思想と感情を奔放な神話的幻想の世界に溶け込ませた長編の詩である。ほかに『九歌』『天問』『九章』などが彼の作とされる。
