In the margins of Bachet's edition of the works of Diophantus , P. de Fermat discovered a surprising proof of the following proposition: "When n is a natural number greater than or equal to 3, the indeterminate equation xn + yn = zn has no integer solutions such that xyz ≠ 0, " but wrote (around 1637) that the margins were too narrow to include the proof. This proposition is known as Fermat's Last Theorem. The solutions to this indeterminate equation when n = 2 are called Pythagorean triples, and it has been known since Greek times that an infinite number of them exist, which contrasts starkly with this proposition.
