Michael Thonet

1796‐1871
German furniture maker and designer. Born in Boppard on the Rhine. He began making furniture in 1819, focusing on marquetry, and around 1830 he invented bentwood furniture, made by softening beech wood with steam or boiling water and shaping it into curved shapes. He obtained a patent in 1841, and moved to Vienna the following year, where he began mass-producing bentwood chairs. The simple and clear form of bentwood furniture makes it easy to standardize, and it is light, elastic, durable, and inexpensive, making it suitable for mass production, and it has continued to be made to this day. ドイツの家具製作者，デザイナー。ライン河畔のボッパルトに生まれた。1819年寄木細工を中心に家具製作を始め，30年ころ，ブナ材を蒸気または熱湯で軟らかくし曲線に成形した曲木家具を案出した。41年には特許を取得，翌年ウィーンに移り，曲木椅子の大量生産を開始した。曲木家具の単純明快な形態は規格化しやすく，軽く，弾力性･耐久性に富み，コストが低いので大量生産に適し，現在にいたるまで作り続けられている。【鍵和田務】
