1796‐1871 German furniture maker and designer. Born in Boppard on the Rhine. He began making furniture in 1819, focusing on marquetry, and around 1830 he invented bentwood furniture, made by softening beech wood with steam or boiling water and shaping it into curved shapes. He obtained a patent in 1841, and moved to Vienna the following year, where he began mass-producing bentwood chairs. The simple and clear form of bentwood furniture makes it easy to standardize, and it is light, elastic, durable, and inexpensive, making it suitable for mass production, and it has continued to be made to this day.
