Around the 4th century BC, the tribes of eastern Georgia started to form a state, and established a unified state excluding Colchis, with its capital at Mtskheta near Tbilisi. According to legend, the first king was Parnabaz, leader of a revolt against Alexander the Great's governor. According to Strabo, the inhabitants were divided into four classes: royalty, priests, free warriors and peasants, and commoners, who were considered slaves of the king. They resisted fiercely against the invasion of Pompey in 66-65 BC, but after the conquest they readily accepted Romanization. …
