Spanish soldier known by the nickname Gran Capitan. Born in Andalusia, southern Spain, which bordered the Muslims, he was summoned to Isabella I at the age of 20 and distinguished himself in the wars against Portugal (1479) and the conquest of Granada (1481-92). When war broke out between Spain and France in 1495 over the Kingdom of Naples in southern Italy, he was sent to Italy, where he established Spanish rule in 1503. During this time he reformed the Spanish infantry based on that of Germany, strengthened its firearms equipment, and modernized tactics, laying the foundations for the Spanish army, which remained undefeated for the next 150 years.

スペインの軍人。グラン･カピタンの通称で知られる。イスラム教徒と国境を接していたスペイン南部のアンダルシアに生まれ，20歳でイサベル1世のもとに呼ばれ，ポルトガルとの戦い(1479)とグラナダ征服戦(1481‐92)で大いに頭角を現した。次いでイタリア南部ナポリ王国をめぐって1495年フランスとの戦端が開かれるや，イタリアに派遣され，1503年同地におけるスペインの支配を確立した。この間に歩兵部隊をドイツのそれにならって改革し，また銃砲装備の強化と戦術の近代化を行って，以後150年間無敗を誇るスペイン陸軍の基礎を据えた。
