...Therefore, the Mannerism of Central Italy, where the pedantic rhetoric of the human motif occupies space, is essentially incompatible with the Venetian school, which only cast a temporary shadow over Titian and Tintoretto, and was essentially transformed into Baroque dramaturgy and splendid pageants (Veronese, Tiepolo). In terms of genre, the Venetian school is particularly known for its streetscapes (veduta) and portraits. The tendency to emphasize the surrounding space rather than the figure, which began with Jacopo Bellini, has flowed into modern landscape painting, on the one hand as a lineage of lyrical utopian landscape expressions such as Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, and early Titian, and on the other hand as a lineage of streetscape paintings that reproduce urban spaces with clear perspective, from Gentile Bellini and Carpaccio to the 18th century Canaletto and Bellotto (among these, Guardi is unique in that he transformed streetscape painting into an unrealistic poetic fantasy).
