Fernandez, Dominique
Born August 25, 1929 in Paris. French author. Studied Italian literature. While teaching at a university, he published novels and essays that made full use of psychoanalytic techniques and were said to be a return to narrative. He won the Prix Medici for Porporino ou les Mistères de Naples (1974), which depicts a castrated singer in 18th century Naples, and the Prix Goncourt for Dans la main de l'ange (82), which was modeled on the work of PP Pasolini. He is openly homosexual, and in La Gloire du paria (87), he takes up the theme of AIDS. His collections of essays include L'Arbre jusqu'aux racines (72).

Born: August 15, 1929 in New Orleans
[Died] March 3, 1980, New York. American dancer. Studied under A. Danilova and A. Markova, and made her debut with the de Basile Ballet in 1946. Danced as a soloist with the Markova-Dorin Ballet, the Alicia Alonso Ballet, and the Mia Slavenska Ballet. Served as principal dancer with the American Ballet Theater from 1957 to 1973, during which time she guest-danced with the London Festival Ballet and M. Fontaine on their world tours.

[Died] August 6, 1986, Mexico City. Mexican film director and actor. He participated in the Mexican Revolutionary War, but traveled to the United States and appeared in American films. He returned to Mexico in 1933 and began directing in 1941. His films, such as Maria Candelaria (1945) and La Perla (1947), were highly acclaimed internationally. From the late 1950s, he also appeared in American westerns, playing unique supporting roles.

[Died] January 22, 1636. Valladolid. Spanish sculptor. Active in Valladolid from about 1605. Following the tradition of Spanish religious sculpture with color, his style was thoroughly realistic, and he is counted among the first sculptors of Baroque naturalism in Spain. His major works include the altar decorations of the Valladolid and Plasencia Cathedrals, the Pieta (1617, Valladolid Museum of Art), and the Baptism of Christ (30?).

[Died] 1567. A Jesuit priest from Hirado, Portugal. He accompanied Francis Xavier and landed in Satsuma in 1549. He was a proficient missionary with a good command of Japanese.

アメリカの舞踊家。 A.ダニロワ,A.マルコワらに学び,1946年ド・バジル・バレエでデビュー。マルコワ=ドーリン・バレエ団,アリシア・アロンソ・バレエ団,ミア・スラベンスカ・バレエ団などでソリストとして踊った。 57~73年アメリカン・バレエ・シアターの首席舞踊手をつとめ,その間ロンドン・フェスティバル・バレエ団や M.フォンティンの世界ツアーに客演した。

メキシコの映画監督,俳優。メキシコ革命戦争に参加するが,渡米してアメリカ映画に出演。 1933年帰国し,41年から監督。 45年の『マリア・カンデラリア』 Maria Candelariaや 47年の『真珠』 La Perlaなどは国際的にも高く評価された。 50年代末からアメリカの西部劇にも出演,ユニークな脇役として活躍した。

スペインの彫刻家。 1605年頃よりバリャドリドで活躍。彩色を施すスペイン宗教彫刻の伝統にならい,写実主義を徹底させた作風で,スペインにおけるバロック的自然主義の最初の彫刻家に数えられる。主要作品はバリャドリドとプラセンシア大聖堂の祭壇装飾,『ピエタ』 (1617,バリャドリド美術館) ,『キリストの洗礼』 (30?) 。
