Togakushi [village] - Togakushi

Japanese: 戸隠[村] - とがくし

A village in Kamiminochi County in northern Nagano Prefecture. Population 5,218 (1995). Located on the Togakushi Plateau, surrounded by Mt. Iizuna and Mt. Kurohime to the east and Mt. Togakushi to the north, the northern part of the town is a heavy snow area with over 2m of snow in winter. Nakasha and Hokosha have long flourished as temple towns for Togakushi Shrine, known as a training ground for ascetic practices. In recent years, the area has become a tourist destination with the addition of campsites, ski resorts, forest botanical gardens and other facilities, and since the opening of the Bird Line (1964), the number of tourists passing through Nagano City has also increased.

長野県北部，上水内（かみみのち）郡の村。人口5218(1995)。東を飯縄（いいづな）山，黒姫山，北を戸隠山に囲まれた戸隠高原にあり，北部は冬季の積雪が2mをこえる豪雪地帯である。中社，宝光社は古くから修験道場として知られた戸隠神社の門前町として栄えた。近年，周辺にキャンプ場，スキー場，森林植物園などの設備が整って観光地化が進み，バードラインの開通(1964)以後，長野市経由の観光客も増加している。
