Also known as dichloromethane. Chemical formula: CH ₂ Cl ₂ . Colorless liquid with boiling point of 39.95°C. It dissolves organic matter well, has a higher specific gravity than water (1.37), and is poorly soluble in water, so is used as an extraction solvent, especially for the extraction of oils and fats. It is also used in large quantities as a solvent for acetyl cellulose. It has a high dissolving power and is used as a cleaning agent, but it is toxic and care must be taken.
