〘Noun〙 (A variation of "tearai (hand washing)") 1. A flat container filled with water or hot water and used to wash the face, hands and feet. In the past, most had two handles for holding. Nowadays, it refers to relatively large containers used mainly for washing clothes, and they can be made of wood, metal or hard vinyl. *Engishiki (927) 34 "Tearai: 1 shaku 5 sun in diameter, 5 sun in depth." *Tales of Ise (early 10th century) 27 "A mat had been placed over the place where the woman was washing her hands, and it could be seen in the shadow of the basin." 2. A large basin used to wash horses. Horse basin (uma- dara /ba-dara) . *Miyoshi Chikuzen no Kami Yoshinaga Ason's Tei-e Onari-no-ki (1561) "New horse boat purchased, basin as above." 3. A container for holding water for religious purification. ※The Old Testament (1888), Exodus 1: 13-16 : "And he put the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar."
