Tetrapartites. Originating from the ancient Greek tetrarchy of Thessaly, an artificial system established for political and military purposes. Later, Philip II of Macedonia also adopted this system when ruling Thessaly (342 BC). It was also adopted by the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, especially Galatia, Syria, and Palestine, and the number was not necessarily four, but came to mean fiefdoms. It also refers to the division of the Roman emperor Diocletian's rule among four emperors (293-305).
