1898‐1936 A Spanish poet and playwright who belonged to the so-called "Generation of 1927". Born in Granada, he spent his time at a student residence in Madrid. He established himself as a poet with his first collection of poems, "Book of Poems" (1921). He then became interested in traditional Andalusian poetry, and published "Gypsy Songs" (1928) and "Cante Jondo Songs" (1931) by sprinkling his own metaphors among folk motifs. These works won him worldwide fame for capturing the true soul of the Gypsies through words and rhythm. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
