Died: September 1, 1599. Dutch explorer and merchant from Aceh. While in Portugal, he was imprisoned for stealing a chart of the East Indies route. After his release, he returned to the Netherlands and set out on an expedition to the East Indies in 1595 with the support of Dutch merchants. He arrived on the north coast of Java the following year, breaking the Portuguese monopoly on the Indian route and opening the door to colonial trade. During his second expedition in 1598, he was killed in battle with the army of the Sultan of Aceh in Sumatra.

オランダの探検家，商人。ポルトガル滞在中，東インド航路の海図を盗んだ容疑で投獄され，釈放後帰国し，オランダ商人の援助で 1595年東インド探検に出発。翌年ジャワ島北岸に到着，ポルトガルのインド航路独占を打破し，植民地貿易の端緒をつくった。 98年からの第2回探検中，スマトラのアチェのスルタン軍と戦って殺された。
