[Born] 1560. Gouda Died: September 1, 1599. Dutch explorer and merchant from Aceh. While in Portugal, he was imprisoned for stealing a chart of the East Indies route. After his release, he returned to the Netherlands and set out on an expedition to the East Indies in 1595 with the support of Dutch merchants. He arrived on the north coast of Java the following year, breaking the Portuguese monopoly on the Indian route and opening the door to colonial trade. During his second expedition in 1598, he was killed in battle with the army of the Sultan of Aceh in Sumatra.
