International Organization for Standardization

Japanese: 国際標準化機構 - こくさいひょうじゅんかきこう(英語表記)International Organization for Standardization
International Organization for Standardization

Abbreviation: ISO. The abbreviation is also pronounced "Iso." It was established in 1947, with its predecessor being the International Association for the Unification of Standards and the United Nations Coordination Committee for Standardization. Its headquarters are in Geneva. It is a non-governmental organization under private law that promotes cooperation between national standardization organizations in each country, and its missions are (1) the coordination and unification of domestic standards for industrial and agricultural products, and (2) the exchange of information and cooperation on standardization activities. ISO standards and ISO recommended standards are established based on the decisions of the technical committee. The Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) joined from Japan in 1952 (Showa 27). Furthermore, under an agreement concluded in 1976, standardization in the fields of electrical engineering and electronics is carried out by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
