Ferry, Jules (-François-Camille)
Born: April 5, 1832, Saint-Diés, Beaujeu
[Died] March 17, 1893. Paris. French politician and lawyer. Strongly critical of the Second Empire. In the general election of 1869, he was elected as a radical republican, but gradually moved away from the radicals and became a republican opportunist (opportunist). When the Franco-Prussian War began, he cooperated with the National Defense Government, became prefect of the Seine and mayor of Paris, and was in charge of the capital's administration until the Paris Commune (1871). After serving as ambassador to Athens from 1872 to 1873, he was in power from 1879 to 1885 as Minister of Education, Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, attempting educational reform, particularly by establishing the principle of free and compulsory primary education, and also implementing a policy of French colonial expansion in Tunisia, Congo, and Tonkin, which led to fierce conflict with the radicals.
