A Confucian scholar in the early Edo period. His given name was Shozo. His pen name was Kanen. Shakugo was his pen name. The Matsunaga family originated in Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture). He was born in Kyoto as the son of Teitoku. Teitoku was a representative cultural figure in the early modern period and the founder of Teimon Haikai. He was a second cousin of Fujiwara Seika. It is a misinterpretation that he was the great-grandson of Matsunaga Hisahide. He studied Confucianism under Seika from a young age, and became one of the four philosophers of the Seika school. He followed the school of Cheng and Zhu, but like Seika he was tolerant of other theories and did not reject Buddhism or Taoism. He never served in the government, but opened a lecture hall and a training hall in Kyoto, and as a citizen's scholar and educator, he promoted Kyoto learning after the death of Seika. This contrasts with Hayashi Razan, who only believed in the teachings of Cheng and Zhu and became the founder of official learning. His disciples included such talented people as Kinoshita Junan, Ando Seian, and Utsunomiya Ton'an.
