An evergreen shrub of the Rubiaceae family. A double-flowered variety of Gardenia, it has been known since ancient times in China and Japan (Kyushu region). In addition to being cultivated in gardens, it is also grown in greenhouses for cut flowers. The leaves and branches are larger than those of ordinary Gardenia, and the flowers are large, double, and have a stronger fragrance. Gardenia was introduced to Europe in the 19th century and was considered the first flower a young man would give to his sweetheart, and it was cultivated as cut flowers for corsages. Large-flowered varieties were developed especially in the United States, where cut flower cultivation was popular, but it dropped off dramatically after World War II.
