Zhu Rong - Shukuyu

A god who appears in ancient Chinese mythology. He is said to be the son or grandson of Zhuan Xu. When King Tang led his army to defeat King Jie, the notorious tyrant and last king of the Xia Dynasty, Zhurong set fire to the castle King Jie was guarding, leading King Tang to victory. Thus, Zhurong is a god closely related to fire, and was considered to be a subordinate of Emperor Yan, who was also a fire god, and also a god of the hearth. In addition, when the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water are assigned to the center and the four directions, respectively, Zhurong was also considered to be a god who governed the south. On the other hand, there are also legends that consider Zhurong not as a deity, but as the name of an official position that handled fire.

中国の古代神話に登場する神。顓頊(せんぎょく)の子あるいは孫と伝えられている。湯王(とうおう)が、暴君の悪名高い夏(か)王朝最後の王である桀王(けつおう)を討ち滅ぼすために軍隊を進めたとき、祝融は桀王の守る城に火災を引き起こして湯王を勝利に導いた。このように、祝融は火と関係の深い神であり、同じく火神である炎帝(えんてい)の配下とされたり、竈(かまど)の神とも考えられた。また五行説が、木、火、土、金、水の五つの元素をそれぞれ中央と四方に当てはめたとき、火を南方に配当したことから、南方をつかさどる神であるともされた。他方、祝融を一個の神格としてではなく、火を取り扱う官職の名前とする伝承も存在している。
