The Roshigumi was formed in Edo in 1862 to control the Sonno Joi faction during the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, and was reorganized in Kyoto the following year by Kondo Isami, Serizawa Kamo, and Hijikata Toshizo. Although the group achieved some impressive results in the Ikedaya Incident (1864), it was disbanded after its defeat in the Boshin War.
