French historian. While studying at the University of Paris, he published a French translation (3 volumes) of Herder's Philosophy of History, which was recognized, and he met Michelet, who became his lifelong friend. He studied at the University of Heidelberg, and in 1828 was appointed by the Institut de France to join a Greek expedition. After returning to Japan, he wrote On the Relation of Modern Greece to the Ancient World (1830), among other works. In 1833, he published the allegorical poem Athbeus, which tells the history of mankind through the "Wandering Jew," and later influenced Rimbaud.

フランスの歴史家。パリ大学在学中ヘルダーの《歴史哲学》のフランス語訳(3巻)を出して認められ，ミシュレと知り合い一生の盟友となった。ハイデルベルク大学に学び，1828年にはフランス学士院の指名でギリシア調査団に加わり，帰国後《現代ギリシアと古代世界の関係について》(1830)等を著した。33年寓意詩《アースベリュス》を出したが，〈さまよえるユダヤ人〉に人類史を語らせるこの叙事詩は後にランボーにも影響をあたえた。
