Benzeneacetic acid. C 8 H 8 O 2 (136.15). C 6 H 5 CH 2 COOH. Also called α-toluic acid. It exists in the free or ester form in essential oils such as peppermint oil, rose oil, and neroli oil. It is synthesized by hydrolysis of benzyl cyanide after converting benzyl chloride to benzyl chloride. Crystal. Melting point 76 °C, boiling point 265 °C, 144 °C (1.6 kPa). 1.091. Soluble in ethanol, ether, or hot water. It is mainly used as an ester in soap fragrances. It is also used as a raw material for the synthesis of stimulants. LD 50 > 5000 mg/kg (rabbit, dermal).
