C 6 H 8 N 2 (108.14). C 6 H 5 NHNH 2 . Also called hydrazinobenzene. It is obtained by reducing benzenediazonium salt with sulfite or tin(II) chloride. Melting point 23 °C, boiling point 241-242 °C, 137-138 °C (2.4 kPa). 1.0978. 1.6081. It oxidizes in air and turns brown. Soluble in ethanol, ether, and benzene. It is weakly basic and is usually used in the form of hydrochloride. It reacts with aldehydes and ketones to produce phenylhydrazones, and with α-ketol to produce osazone crystals, so it is used as a confirmation reagent for these compounds. It is also used as a raw material for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds such as pyrazoles and pyridazines, and dyes. LD 50 188 mg/kg (rat, oral).
