Shuuioujoden - The Tale of the Dead

Japanese:
Shuuioujoden - The Tale of the Dead
This work follows on from Zoku Honcho Ojoden and is written in classical Chinese to describe the deeds of those who have passed away. It was written by Miyoshi Tamekatsu. The first, second and third volumes contain the biographies of 95 people. The first and second volumes are written in the order of monks, lay men, nuns and lay women, while the third volume is written in the order of the people who were visited, ending with Amidabo in Yamato Province, who died in 1111 (Ten'ei 2). It is based on national history, other biographies, temple legends and the Hokke Genki, as well as hearsay, and covers a wide range of regions. In particular, it includes high priests, sutra reciters and immortals, who were not included in the previous Ojoden, probably because the editor considered people who have passed away based on whether they experienced a miraculous event in the Pure Land rather than on the Pure Land practice itself.
