The "Ken Inaoki" in the August entry for the first year of the Taika era (645) in the Nihon Shoki can be interpreted as the administrator of the Tonokura (government warehouses) within the prefectures (agata). After the Taika era, Inaoki lost its original role, and in 684 (the 13th year of Tenmu), it became the lowest-ranking surname in the Eight-Colored Surnames (Yakusa no Kabane), and even became a clan name such as Inshi no Obito and Inaoki no Shiro no Obi.
