Born: February 19, 1789, Kelso [Died] August 18, 1874. Moorepark, British engineer. Worked as a millwright in Manchester from 1817 to 1832. Established a shipyard in Millwall, London in 1835, and worked on improving shipbuilding technology, such as the first use of wrought iron in ship hulls. In 1844, he invented the Lancashire boiler, which had two internal flues, and contributed to the development of boilers. In 1845, together with Robert Stephenson, he began construction of the Britannia Iron Bridge across the Menai Strait, introducing the first tubular bridge system (completed in 1850). He also contributed to the development of bridge technology, such as introducing riveted wrought iron girders. He became president of the Institution of Mechanical Builders in 1854, a member of the Royal Society in 1860, and was created a baronet in 1869. Fairbairn |
