[Died] August 18, 1874. Moorepark, British engineer. Worked as a millwright in Manchester from 1817 to 1832. Established a shipyard in Millwall, London in 1835, and worked on improving shipbuilding technology, such as the first use of wrought iron in ship hulls. In 1844, he invented the Lancashire boiler, which had two internal flues, and contributed to the development of boilers. In 1845, together with Robert Stephenson, he began construction of the Britannia Iron Bridge across the Menai Strait, introducing the first tubular bridge system (completed in 1850). He also contributed to the development of bridge technology, such as introducing riveted wrought iron girders. He became president of the Institution of Mechanical Builders in 1854, a member of the Royal Society in 1860, and was created a baronet in 1869.

A theologian of the British Congregational Church. After serving as pastor in Bathgate and Aberdeen, he served as principal of the Congregational Theological Seminary in Bradford (1877-86), and later founded and became principal of the first liberal seminary in Oxford (86-1900). He advocated liberal theology. His main work is Studies in Religion and Theology (09).

イギリスの技術家。1817～32年までマンチェスターで水車大工として働いた。1835年ロンドンのミルウォールに造船所を設立，船体に初めて錬鉄を採用するなど，造船技術の改良に従事。1844年に内部に 2本の煙道を有するランカシャーボイラを発明し，ボイラの発展に尽くした。1845年にはロバート・スチーブンソンとともにメナイ海峡を渡るブリタニア鉄橋の建設に着手，橋桁を管状に組んだ管橋方式を初めて導入した（1850完成）。またびょう打ちによる錬鉄製の桁を導入するなど架橋技術の発展に貢献。1854年に機械工業協会の会長，1860年にロイヤル・ソサエティ会員となり，1869年には准男爵に叙せられた。

イギリス組合教会の神学者。バスゲイト，アバディーンで牧師を歴任したのち，ブラッドフォードの組合派神学校校長 (1877～86) をつとめ，次いでオックスフォードにおける最初の自由主義神学校を創設し，校長となる (86～1900) 。自由主義神学を擁護。主著『宗教，神学研究』 Studies in Religion and Theology (09) 。
