Feijoa - Feijoa

Japanese: フェイジョア - ふぇいじょあ
Feijoa - Feijoa

A large evergreen shrub of the Myrtaceae family (APG classification: Myrtaceae). It grows to a height of 4-5 meters. The bark peels off in small pieces. The leaves are opposite, ovate-elliptical or elliptical, 5-7 cm long, and almost entire. They are thick and leathery, with a glossy dark green upper surface and dense white down on the underside. In June and July, four-petaled flowers about 4 cm in diameter bloom in the leaf axils. The petals curl upwards into a boat shape, are slightly fleshy, white on the outside, and purple-red on the inside. The pistil and numerous stamens are beautiful crimson. The fruit is elliptical, 3-7 cm long, gray-green with a reddish tinge, and ripens in October and November. The flesh is white and soft, has a pineapple-like scent and sweetness, and is edible.

Native to southern Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, it was introduced to Japan around 1931-1932 (Showa 6-7). It grows in open fields from the southern Kanto region westward and is not very picky about soil type. It is propagated by seeds, cuttings and grafts.
