A doctor, chemist, and hygienist from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. Born in Kyoto. In 1865, he founded the Kyoto Medical Research Society and devoted himself to the study of medicine and chemistry. In 1869, he founded Osaka Hospital, inviting Gratama and Beaudoin, and becoming head of the pharmacy himself, while also working as an assistant to Gratama at the Osaka Pharmaceutical Bureau. The following year, he founded the Kyoto Pharmaceutical Bureau, but in 1884 it was forced to be abolished, and he used his own money to try to save it. In 1885, he proposed the implementation of Japan's first medical licensing examination in Kyoto. In 1887, when a cholera epidemic occurred, he predicted a resurgence two years later and proposed the adoption of a quarantine system, and he devoted himself to public health and many other industrial development projects. Having spent all his personal wealth, he died in disappointment as a practicing physician.

幕末明治期の医者,化学者,衛生学者。京都出身。慶応1(1865)年,京都医学研究会を創設,医学と化学の勉強に励む。明治2(1869)年大阪病院を創設,ハラタマ,ボードインらを招き,自身は薬局主管となるが,また大阪舎密局でハラタマのもとで助手も務める。翌年京都舎密局を創設するも14年廃止のやむなきに至り,私財を投じて,救おうとする。7年京都で日本最初の医師免許試験の実施を提言。また10年にはコレラの流行に際して,2年後の再流行を予言,検疫制度の採用を提案するなど,公衆衛生をはじめ多くの殖産事業に挺身する。私財を消費し尽くして開業医として失意のうちに没した。
