Selbständiges Theater (English)

...The Protto (Japan Proletarian Theater League), founded in 1928, advocated the growth of independent theater in workplaces, rural areas, and schools, and at its peak had over 200 theater circles. These theater activities were also called "independent theater," a direct translation of the German "Selbständiges Theater." These activities were stifled and destroyed by the war, but were revived with the development of the democratic movement after World War II, and reached a peak around the time of the February 1st strike in 1947, with the cooperation of professional theater people, as one of the cultural activities of labor unions.
