...The Protto (Japan Proletarian Theater League), founded in 1928, advocated the growth of independent theater in workplaces, rural areas, and schools, and at its peak had over 200 theater circles. These theater activities were also called "independent theater," a direct translation of the German "Selbständiges Theater."
