Japanese: サモエード[種]（英語表記）Samoyed

A sled dog native to Siberia. It was used as a sled dog by the nomadic Samoyed people who lived near the Arctic Circle, and the breed's name was taken from the ethnic group's name. It was first introduced to the world at the end of the 19th century by British and American polar explorers. It is covered entirely in pure white, thick, beautiful fur, with black eyes and nose, and resembles a large Japanese Spitz. Its elegant appearance quickly spread throughout the world as the most beautiful dog. It has a gentle personality, a dense undercoat that makes it resistant to the cold, and its coat comes in pure white as well as cream colors.

原産地がシベリアのそり犬。北極圏近くに住んだ遊牧民族サモエード諸族がそり犬として使っていたイヌで，民族名が犬種名となった。19世紀末にイギリスやアメリカの極地探検隊によって初めて世界に紹介された。全身が純白の厚く美しい被毛で覆われ，目と鼻だけが黒く，日本スピッツを大型にしたようなイヌである。容姿が優雅で最も美貌なイヌとしてたちまち全世界へ広まった。性格は穏和，被毛は下毛がとくに稠密（ちゆうみつ）で寒さに強く，毛色は純白のほかにクリーム色もある。
