Limestone pillars measuring tens of centimeters to several meters wide and several meters high are found in areas where limestone is exposed. In areas where there is almost no soil and limestone is exposed on the surface, rainwater erodes the limestone rapidly. During this process, the limestone is eroded unevenly due to the undulations of the surface, the joints in the limestone, and the presence of fault planes, and countless grooves are formed vertically and horizontally. The high areas remaining between these grooves are called Karenfeld, and when they stand in countless forests, they present a landscape that resembles gravestones, flocks of sheep, or herds of elephants. 石灰岩が露出した地域にみられる，幅数十 cm～数m，高さ数mの石灰岩石柱。土壌がほとんどなく石灰岩が地表に露出している地域では，雨水による石灰岩の溶食が激しい。その際，表面の起伏，石灰岩の節理，断層面の存在などによって不均等に溶食され，縦横に無数の溝が形成される。それらの溝と溝との間に高く残った部分がカレンフェルトで，無数に林立して墓石，羊群，象群のような景観を呈する。 (→カルスト地形 )
