The military governor of Chinjufu, the military government that managed the ancient Ezo. In many cases, the Mutsu no Kami also held this position. During the Ritsuryo period up until the Nara and early Heian periods, the position was called "Chinju Shogun" and not "Chinjufu Shogun." The term "fu" was added from the mid-Heian period onwards, and even though it became a nominal title in the late Heian period, it was still considered the most prestigious honorary position for the military. After Minamoto no Yoritomo was appointed Seii Taishogun (1192), this title was abolished, but the Seii Taishogun of the Kamakura shogunate was considered to replace Chinjufu Shogun.
